22ND JUNE 2009 LINGFIELD + WOLVERHAMPTON

2.15 E B F DEEP HEAT MAIDEN FILLIES´ STAKES (CLASS 5)(2yo) Winner £3,562 8 runners 5f

Mind The Monarch (57)

Only one horse having previously run on the all weather with a rating of 57 is no recommendation.

2.45 YOU CAN FEEL IT WORKING COVONIA HANDICAP (CLASS 4)(4yo+ 0-80) Winner £5,828 12 runners 7f

Billberry (90) I Confess (90) Fiefdom (87)

Top three are comfortably clear of remainder. All coming back in trip after contesting 1 mile race at Lingfield which should not be a problem as all three have previously won over this trip. Only Fiefdom of these three has previously won in this class. Billberry has to be the horse with the most improvement and was eye catching LTO but is this trip to short.

3.15 WINTHROP HANDICAP (CLASS 3)(3yo+ 0-90) Winner £8,419 10 runners 5f

Lochstar (91) Chjimes (88) Peak District (87)

Again the top three well clear of the remainder and no draw advantage to speak off for any. Chjimes rating from Wolverhampton is a little plus but my hear rules my head with Lochstar being a great fan of Lochsong.

2.30 TETLEY BITTER AMATEUR RIDERS´ SELLING STAKES (CLASS 6)(4yo+) Winner £1,978 12 runners 1m4f50y

Turner’s Touch (89) Aureate (87) Waterside (85)

The title of the race tells you to stay away! A combination of Amateur Riders and Sellers is not a good combination. There is nothing to suggest the first two rated should not be the protagonists but as the early prices suggest that Turner’s will be around 12-1 should be a fair E.W. if it doesn’t try to pull itself up again when hitting the front!!

3.00 BETDAQ POKER HANDICAP (CLASS 6)(3yo+ 0-60) Winner £2,388 12 runners 7f32y

Avoca Dancer (83) Dickie La Davoir (83) Convallaria (77) Loyal Royal (77) Prince Golan (77)

Although the first two are 6 points clear on my ratings (83) is not a figure that inspires any confidence. Both stepping up from LTO all weather. 2 of Dickie La Davoir 3 all weather wins have come over this trip. Avoca Dancer’s all weather wins have all been over 6f but won last time out over 7f on turf.

3.30 TRY BETDAQ FOR AN EXCHANGE CLAIMING STAKES (CLASS 5)(3yo) Winner £2,914 13 runners 5f216y

Swiss Art (93) Capo Regime (92) Belated Silver (88)

With both Swiss Art and Belated Silver ratings coming from Southwell I belive this should be an easier task for them. Both coming back in trip 1f which I believe will suit Swiss Art the better.

4.00 EUROPEAN BREEDERS´ FUND MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5)(2yo) Winner £3,886 13 runners 5f216y

Beach Boy (21)

If Beach Boy can reproduce the form of his last outing he should come LAST!!!

4.30 WOLVERHAMPTON-RACECOURSE.CO.UK HANDICAP (CLASS 6)(3yo+ 0-60) Winner £1,979 13 runners 5f216y

Triumphant Welcome (91) Bertbrand (83) Secret Dubai (79)

I can not see past the top rated who is 8 points clear and well drawn over the same trip as LTO. Should be able to reproduce form shown at Southwell.

5.00 BETDAQ POKER MEDIAN AUCTION MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5)(3yo) Winner £3,071 13 runners 1m141y

Kefalonia (82) Layer Cake (70)

Best watched

5.30 BETDAQ.CO.UK HANDICAP (CLASS 5)(3yo 0-70) Winner £3,886 9 runners 5f20y

La Capriosa (81) You’relikemefrank (81) Jolly Ranch (76)Another poor quality race. Top two appearing over the same trip as last all weather appearance and nothing to suggest they are any better than this

20TH JUNE 2009 LINGFIELD

5.50 SEVENOAKS SELLING STAKES (CLASS 6)(3yo) Winner £2,047 10 runners 1m4f

First Spirit (88) Diktaram (74) Top Tinker (61)

First Spirit LTO performance is a long way clear of those other rivals that have previously raced on the surface. With its LTO rating over this course and distance. This is a marginal decision but I feel a little un-easy due to the quality of opposition in its previous race and the likely short price. If in doubt leave it out!!

6.20 NSPCC CHILD´S VOICE APPEAL HANDICAP (CLASS 6)(4yo+ 0-60) Winner £2,047 14 runners 1m2f

Free Tussy (88) Homebred Star (88) Play up Pompey (82)

Top two have a healthy margin over the rest of the field. Both drawn side by side, Free Tussy out again over the same course and distance as opposed to Homebred Star coming back in trip two furlongs. Binnion Bay (81) my fourth rated is of interest as the breeding would suggest that 10f is within its compass.

17TH JUNE 2009 KEMPTON

6.10 WEATHERBYS V.A.T. SERVICES APPRENTICE HANDICAP (ROUND 3) (CLASS 4)(4yo+ 0-80) Winner £4,727 14 runners 1m2f

Can Can Star (91) Justcallmehandsome (90) Buddy Holly (88)

The top three rated are all changing trip from last time out. The preference would be to consider horses coming back in trip which fits the profile of only for Buddy Holly. To strengthen Buddy Holly’s claims are LTO rating is from Southwell.

6.40 ISC MAIDEN FILLIES´ STAKES (CLASS 5)(3yo+) Winner £2,590 14 runners 1m2f
M’Lady Rousseur (82) Zeyadah (67) Moojeh (64)

Of the four that have raced previously on the surface M’Lady Rousseur would be the pick but would suggest that in the seven yet to race on an all weather surface there is most likely to be something better than (82)

7.10 DIGIBET HANDICAP (CLASS 4)(3yo 0-85) Winner £4,727 8 runners 1m2f
Ballet Dancer (91) Sandor (91) Hallstatt (90)

Top three are tightly matched and only Hallstatt rated over this trip. I doubt this race will see any of the three equal their efforts LTO. Best left alone

7.40 INTEGRATED SECURITY CONSULTANTS EBF MAIDEN FILLIES´ STAKES (CLASS 5)(2yo) Winner £3,886 10 runners 7f

No rated horses.

8:10 DIGIBET CASINO HANDICAP (CLASS 4)(3yo 0-85) Winner £4,727 12 runners 6f

Ray Of Joy (93) Seek The Fair Land (90) Satwa Street (86)

Should be an easy race to read given the top three ratings have all come from course and trip. If only racing was so simple!! Ray Of Joy has a disadvantage in respect of the draw but if the tissue is a good guide must be an solid E.W. bet. Also note that Mac’s Power has been entered in two races at the meeting. The choice of race will be interesting as my fourth rated in this with (85)

8.40 DIGIBET.COM HANDICAP (CLASS 6)(4yo+ 0-65) Winner £2,047 14 runners 2m

Jafaru (91) Calculating (85) Champagne Cocktail (82)

With the top rated all going up in trip, two of them dramatically and with no endorsement in their breeding to suggest this is an optimum trip. For me this is a race to watch only.

9.10 PANORAMIC BAR & RESTAURANT HANDICAP (CLASS 4)(3yo+ 0-85) Winner £4,727
Street Power (90) Sweet Gale (90) Obe Royal (82)

Ratings would suggest a healthy margin between the top two and the rest of the field. Street Power has a distinct draw advantage and is going back up to its optimum trip. I view Street Power’s LTO from Wolverhampton to Kempton over this trip very favourably. I would be surprised if Mac’s Power ops for this race having been also entered in the 8:10 where it has better claims.

Horse Racing - Trip Down Memory Lane

As there is no AWT racing until Monday 13th I decided to do some research and while thumbing through some old racing books found an old page from Raceform which bought back a great memory from my past carefully folded within the pages.

How attractive a proposition was Pipssalio. Still a Maiden after 4 outings, its 3 outings as a 2yo read beaten 16 lengths in Class 5 3k Novice, beaten 16 lengths in a Class 6 2k Maiden, Beaten 14 lengths in a Class 4 3k Maiden. 1 outing as a 3yo beaten ½ length in a Class 4 4k Handicap. Looked to be way out of its depth being entered in a Class 3 14k Handicap. Pipssalio was 10lb out of the handicap and the jockey (Francis Norton) was putting up 2lb over weight.

My speed figures told me a different story. In fact I can remember being so bullish I was nailing my colours to the mast on all the forums and to the Raceform. This for me was the outstanding bet of the following day, the outstanding bet of the week and of the month. I went to bed unable to sleep with anticipation for the following day fully confident I would be making a lot of money. As soon as I got up on the day of the race I started checking the prices to ensure the tissue given the evening before was correct. Pipssalio was still 20-1.

The time of the race had arrived and in horror I watched as Pipssalio fell out of the stalls. By the time they had reached half-way in the 1 mile contest it was flat to the boards well adrift of the rest of the field with Franny Norton rowing away and beating the horse to death!

My feelings at the time were partly embarrassment due to the comments I had made on various forums , partly anger and all confidence in my ability to create meaningful speed figures gone in 60 seconds but being the eternal optimist still a slither of hope.

With 2 furlongs to go Pipssalio started to reduce the gap. With a furlong to go the rest of the field started to paddle and Pipssalio appeared to have sprouted wings and was closing on the leaders at an unbelievable rate. As they flashed passed the post Franny Norton had driven Pipssalio between the two leaders to make a three way photo finish. Even though I believed Pipssalio had got there it was going to be on the nod. Pipssalio got the verdict beating 2nd Everest by a short-head who in turn had beaten 3rd Tumbleweed Tor by a short-head.

That is the margin of winning and losing. The difference between the feeling of abject failure and believing you can walk on water.
